Tour Details

Blaca Hermitage is the very first landmark on the island of Brač that caught the eye of UNESCO as it was recognized as a candidate for UNESCO’s World Heritage Tentative List.

It was Built in 1551 by two Glagolithic monks from Poljica who fled before the Ottoman invasion. They settled in the cave first and then started to build their shelter, including a church and a monastery. Dozens of successors fought a harsh climate, rocky terrain, and constant pirate threats, so it’s safe to say that Blaca Hermitage is a monument to the strength of the human body and spirit. Relentless persistence resulted in providing a school to local children, forming a library and cultural center, and building an observatory. These achievements came after centuries of hard work in Blaca Walley: at its peak, this extraordinary community produced olive oil, wine, honey, and other products. When the last monk Nikola Milićević passed away in 1963., Blaca Hermitage became inactive with the legacy of the Glagolithic order in Blaca preserved now as a museum.
